Plymouth Community Homes get together with residents

More than 200 young people and families came together last week (Thursday 12 August) to take part in one of the biggest resident events staged by Plymouth Community Homes.

‘Woodland Wood’ day was held in the valley between Plymouth Community Homes estates at Whitleigh and West Park. It was opportunity for children, young people and families to meet Plymouth Community Homes staff and to enjoy a day together in an informal and fun setting.

The housing association had support and funding by the ‘Stepping Stones to Nature’ Project to make sure they offered residents a day to remember as well as reinforcing their shared commitment to the environment.

Event Organiser, Deborah Beadle (Resident Involvement Officer) said: “We know from experience that quite often residents would appreciate a chance to ask questions and to talk to Plymouth Community Homes about issues that affect them. That can be tricky when there are children and young people, especially during the holidays.”

“Days like this are a great opportunity for us all to come together with residents, work with local partners and make sure the children have fun at the same time”.

Young people had a chance to get involved in a whole range of activities, from making goblins with the Plymouth Play Association to having monkey-fun in the trees with nets, swings and tree ladders with The Eden Project to doing a nature trail and the under 5s were given a lovely children’s book by local author Simon James entitled ‘The Wild Woods’. The resident involvement team were joined by volunteers from across the organisation who took a day out of the office to meet local residents and talk about what was on their mind. Plymouth Community Homes caretaking team spent hours making sure that main base was clean, attractive and safe for the big day.

Belinda Pascoe, Head of Governance and Standards volunteered to help. She said: “It was an opportunity to talk to residents about their issues which helps us think about how we keep improving our service to them. In such an informal and fun setting, it was just a great experience as well.”
