Devonport Live celebration is the start of things to come

Devonport Live put on a popular event yesterday for the Devonport community attended by over a hundred people!

The café acts as a hub for the community and is not only a popular café serving great food at cheap prices but acts as a place for groups to meet, learn and play. The organisation serves as a Community Interest Group (CIC) and as a social enterprise.

People were encouraged to become members of Devonport Live and enjoy free tea and cake while PCH were on hand to give housing advice to people those in attendance.

Being the change in the community is Devonport Live’s slogan, and a big deal to Manager Sarah and her staff - Katie, Hannah, Jamie and Lewis.

Sarah said: “This is a fantastic day for everyone involved, we are really pleased with how the café has taken off – we’re always really busy because we offer people a good service, our prices are low and we have a real community spirit here, people love coming in and we have a lot of regular customers.”

It’s the social conscience that sets Devonport Live apart as Katie explains: “We work on a ‘Pay It Forward’ basis which is a story about a young boy who did three good deeds for others in need. In return, all that the child wanted was that they pass on the good deed to three other people and keep the cycle going.

“One good deed might not seem like much, but if everyone did something good for someone else, then the cycle of generosity and kindness can spark us to become better people. We’ve adopted this idea – customers can choose to pay a little bit extra for their own meal, enabling someone to have a coffee or meal who may not have been able to afford it at the time.”

Victoria Ware, Assistant Housing Officer for the area said: “Coming to events in the area helps us to give out really helpful advice to people, whether they are our residents or have any issues, we are more than happy to signpost people to help and support.

“Somewhere like Devonport Live is such a well-recognised community hub that it’s the perfect place to hold an event – there are always people passing through and it’s a warm and friendly atmosphere.

“We’ll be coming back to Devonport Live at Christmas for a large community event with Santa later this year so watch this space!”
