First phase of new homes at Southway Primary site ready

We’ve taken handover from our contractor Galliford Try of the first 26 homes at the Brentor View development in Bampfylde Way.

Of these, 15 will be allocated for affordable rent and 11 for shared ownership sale through SO Living.

Those looking to rent a home will be able to bid for them through Devon Home Choice.

Those looking to buy a shared ownership home can come along to the show home launch from tomorrow (Saturday), when the two-bedroom Rupe opens its doors.

The entire scheme is due to be finished this winter and will feature 55 homes for rent and 40 for shared ownership sale.

Two of the homes were unveiled to our staff and partners today (Friday).

The site has also hosted Galliford’s Skills Academy, which has seen unemployed people train for construction-based careers.

Claire Newcombe, PCH Development Officer, said: “We’ve worked closely with Plymouth City Council to develop the former primary school site as part of their Plan for Homes programme to deliver more housing for the city.

“This scheme is sure to attract lots of interest from people either looking for a home to rent or to buy. There’s a good mix of one, two, three and four bed homes.”

Speaking at the launch, Nick Jackson, PCH Director of Business Services and Development, said: “These homes were built by modern methods of construction – timber frame and render clad.

“This has helped to speed up delivery and I’m glad to say the new homes are due to be finished ahead of time, with the final 69 homes programmed for completion this winter – six months ahead of schedule.”

Gavin Caldwell, Galliford Try Build Manager, mentioned the benefits the development brought to the local area. He said: “We’ve had 62 people on the Skills Academy. They did a lot of work with the nearby youth centre. We hope that’s been of benefit to the community.”

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet member for Housing and Cooperative Development, said: "It's great to see yet another Plan for Homes site turn into a high-quality mix of affordable homes.

"This is exactly the kind of scheme we plan to deliver more of and I look forward to seeing local families making these houses home."
