Ken's new lease of life after discovering hobby which sees him helping others

Widower Ken needed a change after the death of his beloved wife Joan, who he was married to for 49 years.

A friend suggested he take up bowls and Ken started playing up on the Hoe.

He soon started playing at the Life Centre too, and it was there that a member of staff suggested he volunteer his time to help the disabled and those with learning difficulties play bowls.

Our Housing with Support tenant Ken sets off walking from his home near Crownhill at 7am once a week to get to the Life Centre in time to set up the hall for the participants.

He said: “After my wife died my friend suggested I take up bowling to get out. I was her carer for ten years. I was moping about a bit.

“People of all ages come bowling, many with their carers. They’re great. I enjoy it – it’s great camaraderie. I’m really glad I took it up.”
