Laying the last bricks

Schoolkids got the chance to experience life on a building site at the North Prospect regeneration.

The main contractor working on the third phase of the development invited future generations to take part in an event to mark the near completion of the construction build stage at Southern Gate.

Kier Living invited two local schools close to North Prospect to lay some of the final bricks.

Pupils from Weston Mill Primary School and Ford Primary Academy also listened to a talk about building site safety and looked at site plans.

Kelly Locke, Kier Living’s Marketing and Communications Manager, said: “This exercise was a fantastic way of showcasing what happens on a live site, giving the children the opportunity to take part in laying some of the final bricks.

“Children learn through play so we’re confident they will take away a lot from the event, especially the safety talk with Easter fast approaching.”

All children were chaperoned to and from the site and issued with safety wear.

Tina Olver, PCH Senior Development Officer, said: “Kier has been very proactive in the wider community events in North Prospect which have included ‘Unsung Heroes’ – where the children paid gratitude to their loved ones by naming some of our homes – ‘Meet the Builder’ and an Easter pebble art competition.

“We hope the children enjoyed taking part in laying some of the final bricks on this third phase of the regeneration.”

Weston Mill Primary pupil Aneeqa, six, said: “I really liked when we laid the bricks and put the cement on. The bricks were really heavy. We also learnt that it’s important we keep our hats on.”

Southern Gate is due to complete in the summer and will feature 159 new homes – 81 for rent, 31 for shared ownership sale through SO Living and 47 for open market sale with Kier, most of which are now occupied.

We’ve just learned that Southern Gate has been nominated for two prestigious construction awards.

The phase has been shortlisted in the Best High Volume New Housing Development and Best Social or Affordable New Housing Development  categories at the LABC Awards. The winners will be announced in May.

Our Phase 5 development Briarwood is now underway, with Kier Living having successfully been awarded the contract.

Awareness of the new homes is already being generated and both sales teams are anticipating a lot of interest in the coming months.
