PCH celebrates Carol’s success!

PCH resident Carol Armstrong has recently passed the exam for the Entry Level 3 Functional Skills in mathematics, achieving an absolutely fantastic result of 91%!

Carol began attending maths classes provided by On Course South West as part of our Learn for Free training programme at Plumer House in November 2017 and in a short space of time, progressed from community based learning sessions onto the functional skills based classes.

Carol said: “When I was at school, I was told I was hopeless, that I just couldn’t do it. I decided to do this for myself, to challenge myself and prove that I can do it! I really like the maths classes, I enjoy learning and gaining more knowledge. My dyslexia doesn’t hold me back.”

Now, Carol can progress onto GCSE equivalent courses and gain more qualifications. The lessons have made a big difference to Carol and she’s begun to get better positions whilst doing voluntary work, boosting her confidence further.

Ryan Huws, Communities Worker at Plymouth Community Homes said: “Many people on our classes didn’t do that well at school and then have gone through life thinking that they couldn’t do Maths and English. Carol is a great example of someone who has enough courage to give it another go.  It’s not easy to walk through that door for the first time, but we’re here to help”.

Course teacher Nicholas Akhurst of On Course South West said: “We do a lot of community based learning as a business, particularly with adults who are getting a second chance to learn and gain qualifications. It’s a fantastic feeling seeing people improve, grow in confidence and achieve great results. Learner progress is the reason I became a teacher!”

Having always enjoyed learning in spite of the obstacles in her way, Carol plans to continue with maths and English lessons and would like to study history next.

New classes in Maths and English for beginners will start around September 2018 and for more details on how to take part, please contact the Communities Team on 0808 2306500 or via email at communities@plymouthcommunityhomes.co.uk.
