Plymouth Raiders provide coaching for young residents

Plymouth Community Homes teamed up with Plymouth Raiders this summer offering free coaching sessions to children in Devonport throughout the school holidays.

The sessions proved extremely popular over the course of the summer holidays and were held weekly on Wednesdays at the Mount Wise Basketball court off Clowance Street and at the Granby arena.

Delivering the sessions each week throughout the summer were Raiders players Josh Palmer, Tola Okiki and Denzel Ubiaro. The fun sessions, which were for all abilities aged seven and above included learning basketball skills, team activities and the importance of healthy nutrition.

The summer holidays are the perfect time to get some exercise outside and the sessions promoted the benefits of moving, fuelling the body with healthy snacks, all whilst having lots of fun.

Communities Worker Hayley Kemp said: “It’s lovely that a local team as big as the Plymouth Raiders, have been able to support these sessions again this summer, the players have been a credit to the Raiders. We’ve had so many children involved in these sessions and they were so excited to meet the players.

“It’s a great way to teach children about nutrition and to get them moving in a way that’s fun. Hopefully it has opened up a new sport for them to do regularly and we will look to support those who are keen to continue playing more regularly.”
