Last week, our apprentice carpenters, Ben and Kieran, put their skills to work by helping to build a set of new benches at Rowan House, Derriford Hospital.

The project came about after Rowan House staff successfully secured funding through a lottery scheme to improve the Dermatology Department’s breakout area. The funding was awarded to provide additional seating and create a welcoming outdoor space for those using the site.

After receiving the good news that the bid had been successful, they needed some support to assemble the benches. This is where Ben and Kieran stepped in, volunteering their time and expertise to help bring the project to life.

Tracy Lamerton, Support Manager in Dermatology at Derriford Hospital, said:

“A huge thank you to your team for putting together our new picnic benches. Your support and fantastic workmanship are truly appreciated. We know our staff will be delighted to enjoy them, and they will be a wonderful addition to our outdoor space. Thank you, PCH, for your help in making this happen.”

When we visited the apprentices last week, the benches were already being well used. The project showcased Ben and Kieran’s skills, teamwork and commitment, while making a lasting contribution to the local community.

Ben Southern, Carpenter Apprentice, said:

“I’ve been an apprentice for around 10 months now, but the last few weeks have been a real highlight as I’ve started taking on more independent work and figuring things out in real time. Being involved in projects like this is a great opportunity to put my skills into practice. I really enjoy working at PCH. I started out as a Ranger and have worked my way around different roles, but I wouldn’t want to leave. Everyone is incredibly supportive and encourages you to achieve your goals, whether that’s progressing your career, developing new skills or working towards a Level 3 qualification.”

Kieran Lamerton, Carpenter Apprentice, said:

“I didn’t really enjoy school, but an apprenticeship is completely different and I’m really enjoying it. It’s a reliable role, I’m learning something new all the time, and everyone at PCH is really supportive. I’d recommend an apprenticeship to anyone considering it.”

A huge thank you to Ben, Kieran and all our apprentices for their continued hard work, dedication and commitment. Their willingness to support projects in the local community is a fantastic reflection of both their skills and the values of the PCH team.
