Residents near Flora Street and Devonshire House are now able to enjoy improved garden spaces, thanks to a community-led effort that brought in a much-needed water supply. With no outdoor tap on site, watering had previously been difficult and expensive for residents trying to maintain flowers, trees and shrubs in their shared green space.
The solution came together through a real team effort. St Peter’s School kindly donated a section of land for residents to turn into a community garden. Councillor Alison Raynsford then reached out to South West Water, who donated two large water butts to support the project.
Plymouth Community Homes coordinated the final steps, helping to arrange installation and supplying the necessary guttering and parts. Local contractor Chris Miller from First Choice Cleaning & Property Services generously stepped in to carry out the fitting, ensuring everything was set up properly and safely for long-term use.
Councillor Raynsford said:
“I’m delighted there’s now a water supply for residents to enjoy. It’s been great that everyone has come together, enabling flowers to bloom that simply wouldn’t have previously.
Thank you to everyone who contributed – from the residents who started the ball rolling, to South West Water for the donation, First Choice for the fitting, and PCH for making it all happen.”
Devonshire House resident Jack Rees has already noticed the difference:
“Last month I was filling watering cans from my bath, and it was adding £20 to my water bill!
These water butts are great – they fill up well and you get loads out of them.
My kitchen window looks out onto one of the garden areas, and it’s been so nice to see it all come together.”
The project is a brilliant example of what can happen when residents, local organisations and community partners work together. We look forward to returning next year.
