Growing Together for a Greener Plymouth

A generous donation of compost from Coastal Recycling is set to benefit communities across Plymouth, thanks to a growing partnership between Plymouth Community Homes (PCH) and Green Communities a Plymouth City Council led initiative working in partnership with National Trust.

PCH Sustainability Lead, Calum Gordon and Green Communities met with representatives from Coastal Recycling to receive a delivery of soil improver worth approximately £4.2k. The donation forms part of an ongoing partnership to support environmental initiatives and community projects throughout the city.

The high-quality soil improver will be used to improve a range of community spaces and growing projects, creating opportunities for residents and local groups to improve green areas.

Nicole Seff, Coastal Recycling’s Marketing and Community Engagement Manager, said:

“At Coastal Recycling, we are passionate about supporting the communities we serve. Our partnership with PCH is built on shared values and a commitment to delivering meaningful social value locally. Having provided 28 tonnes of compost so far, we are proud to contribute to projects that will benefit PCH’s residents and community groups, helping gardens, green spaces, and local initiatives flourish."

Green Communities is one of the first organisations to benefit from the donation, a valued community partner working to bring people together through environmental projects. The group will utilise the soil during the upcoming George Street Fun Day, taking place on 27 August, where residents will get involved in planting and have a say on their garden space.

"Green Communities offers a wide range of free nature-based activities across Central Park, Devonport and Keyham. We also work alongside fantastic local groups including the Green Devonport Partnership, Mount Wise Neighbourhood Centre Gardening Group and Generous Earth Composting at Devonport Park. We're always keen to connect with residents and hear about opportunities to support local nature projects, community gardens, and activities that help people develop green skills, from gardening and wildlife identification to nature-inspired arts and crafts.”

The donation is expected to have a lasting impact. Moving forward, the soil will support a variety of community-led initiatives across Plymouth, helping residents transform outdoor spaces, encourage biodiversity and create greener neighbourhoods.

“The PCH Communities and Partnerships Team support several gardening and environmental projects throughout the city. Earlier in the year, PCH contractor, Coastal, delivered a lorry load of compost to the St Budeaux Platform Men’s Gardening Group. Often on sites, the soil isn’t that great, so any additional compost will be so beneficial. Many gardening groups will be glad to get this additional wholesome soil.”
