Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes when you report a repair?

We caught up with Kevin Tapp, Area Repairs Supervisor, to find out more about his role, what a typical day looks like and how he helps ensure residents receive the repairs service they need.

Kevin has worked at Plymouth Community Homes for 21 years, having joined the organisation as an apprentice mason at just 16 years old. Today, he leads a team responsible for delivering repairs across the city.

Watch Kevin's Day in the Life video or read our interview below.

What does an Area Repairs Supervisor do?

If I had to describe my role in three words, it would be: lead, support and deliver.

I support and manage a team of operatives, help resolve repair issues, work closely with contractors and colleagues, and make sure repairs are completed to a high standard for residents.

What does a typical day look like?

No two days are ever the same.

My day can include responding to resident queries, carrying out repair inspections, supporting colleagues with complex repairs, dealing with complaints, attending joint visits with Housing Officers, liaising with contractors and completing health and safety inspections.

I also carry out quality checks on completed work to make sure we're delivering the best possible service.

What is the most rewarding part of the job?

The most rewarding part is knowing we've helped solve a problem and made a positive difference for a resident.

Recently, I supported a resident who had experienced repeated repair issues. I reviewed the repair history, coordinated the right people and arranged the necessary works. I kept the resident updated throughout and made sure the repair was completed properly.

Seeing the difference that made was incredibly rewarding. It reminded me that good supervision isn't just about completing repairs. It's about taking ownership and delivering the best outcome for residents.

What might residents not realise about the repairs service?

There's a lot happening behind the scenes to make sure repairs run smoothly.

Our planning and scheduling teams play a vital role in coordinating appointments, allocating jobs and helping us respond as efficiently as possible.

Repairs are prioritised according to urgency:

  • Emergency repairs: within 24 hours
  • Urgent repairs: within 5 days
  • Routine repairs: within 20 days
  • Planned repairs: within 60 days

Good teamwork across the service helps us deliver the results residents expect.

How did you get into the role?

I joined PCH at 16 as an apprentice mason and completed my NVQ Level 3 in Trowel Occupations.

After working as a multi-trade mason for 10 years, I had the opportunity to shadow a Repairs Supervisor. The role really interested me and, with support from my manager and PCH's training and development opportunities, I successfully progressed into the position.

I've continued developing my skills and knowledge ever since.

What do you enjoy most about working for PCH?

PCH is a supportive organisation with colleagues who genuinely care about providing a great service for residents.

We're all working towards the same goal: making a positive difference for residents and communities across Plymouth.

Thank you to Kevin for taking the time to share an insight into his role and the work that goes on behind the scenes to deliver repairs for residents every day.
