March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
This month, we’re highlighting a disease that is often hard to spot and amplifying the brave voices of women like our Housing Officer, Lou, who is sharing her story to help others get diagnosed sooner.
Lou first knew something wasn’t right when she developed persistent pain. “I just had this feeling something wasn’t quite me”, she says. Trusting that instinct led to scans, major surgery, and eventually a diagnosis of low-grade serous ovarian cancer.
Since then, Lou has undergone multiple operations and is now having chemotherapy and hormone treatment to manage the disease. Through it all, she’s determined to raise awareness.
“If talking about what happened to me helps even one woman get seen sooner, it’s worth it.
“A smear test doesn’t detect ovarian cancer - I didn’t know that at the start.
“Please listen to your body. If something feels off, keep pushing for answers.”
Ovarian cancer has no routine screening - knowing the symptoms and trusting yourself truly matters.
