PCH Green Transport Week: Walking as mode of sustainable transport

10 June 25

Rambler Wellbeing Walks 23

Walking is recognised as a sustainable mode of transport, and according to a European Environment Agency (EEA) report published in 2020, it remains one of the best ways to improve sustainable mobility in cities.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) reports, sustainable transport improves people’s health and quality of life, with long-term health benefits ranging from improved mental health to the prevention of serious health conditions.

In Plymouth, there are lots of opportunities to get into walking as a sustainable mode of transport, either alone or in a group, and they cater for all ages and abilities.

Plymouth City Council has created a number of helpful webpages with information about walking routes in the city, as well as key details of free walking apps to help you explore.

Plymouth Trails offers free audio guided historic walks across Plymouth, helping you to explore new routes and learn about the fascinating history of the city. The Devonport Heritage Trail is the latest trail, and we are proud that Leroy, one of our residents was given the opportunity to be the voiceover of the trail. To access the full Devonport Heritage Trail, and an audio version of the trail, download the “Plymouth Trails” app for free! Or visit www.visitplymouth.co.uk/trails

One You Plymouth coordinate various wellbeing walks across Plymouth and the surrounding area, as a part of their partnership with organisations such as Ramblers, and with the help of their dedicated walk leaders.

They offer walks for all levels of ability that last for a period of 10 to 60 minutes. With trained and experienced walk leaders, you will not be left behind and there are regular opportunities for breaks when needed.

One You Plymouth offer three main health walks:

  • St Judes - Every Tuesday at 10.30 am.
Meet at St Jude’s church, Beaumont Road, PL4 9BJ. Includes a short, medium and long walk to cater for all abilities.

  • Victoria Park - The second Wednesday of every month at 10:30. Meet outside the Park Cafe, PL1 5LZ. Includes a short 10 – 15 minute walk and a longer 50 minute walk.
