This week, our Communities and Partnerships team joined Food is Fun at Poole Farm in Plymouth to deliver a free cookery workshop for residents.

Food is Fun is a Devon-based charity dedicated to making food enjoyable and accessible through engaging, hands-on activities that encourage healthier, more confident cooking.

Jo, Food is Fun tutor said:

"We work with all sorts of people across the community. Some have never cooked before, while others are already confident in the kitchen. But it's not just about the cooking; it's also about bringing people together and having a chat. It's fantastic to work with such a wide range of people and meet so many different faces, from young mums and veterans to those attending menopause support groups."

Residents attended the session to develop their cooking skills, build confidence in the kitchen and socialise with others in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Colin McEwan, Plymouth Community Homes resident said:

"I love cooking, so it's great to come along to something like this. It's not just about learning new recipes; it's also a fantastic opportunity to meet new people. The staff are amazing too they’re always friendly, welcoming and professional. We've made some fantastic dishes over the weeks, from bread rolls this week to apple crumble previously, and it's lovely to look back on what we've created. I really look forward to coming each time, and the food is always delicious."

The cookery workshops take place throughout the year, with many residents choosing to attend regularly. This week's menu featured homemade tomato soup and freshly baked bread. Residents helped to prepare the food before sitting down together to enjoy lunch.

Alastair Hooper, PCH resident, said:

"I've been taking part in these sessions since they first started. The Communities team has really encouraged me to get involved in activities like this, and I always have fun. Taking part has had a really positive impact on my mental health, and I look forward to every session."
